Rallycross explained

Everything you need to go from this looks fun to your first run.

What is rallycross?

Race against the clock in your own car on off-road tracks. For newbies, this means you can go at your own pace while you build skills and speed. And for experienced drivers, technical courses keep the challenge high, no matter how many events you’ve run.

Can my car do this?

Daily drivers, lightly modified street cars, fully built rally cars and side-by-sides all share the same course. Everyone is trying something different, and there’s no single answer to “what’s the best car for rallycross?”

No matter what kind of car you bring, it needs to meet the rules and pass tech inspection every time you race. You’ll go through a straightforward safety check the morning of the race. Our guide walks you through what the inspectors look for so there are no surprises.

What does it cost?

Compared to track days, driving schools and other forms of racing, rallycross is one of the most affordable ways to get started in motorsports.

Race registration starts at $150, or up to $350 for multi-day races, but there are easy ways to save: camp instead of paying for a hotel, split the driving/travel with a friend and look for budget-friendly parts and gear.

What happens on race day?

Details change from event to event but every race day follows a similar flow.

What a race day looks like

  1. Arrive and check in

Park in the paddock, set up and prepare to race.

  2. Tech inspection and course walking

A quick safety check on your car and helmet, then walk the course to learn the layout.

  3. Mandatory driver meeting

All drivers attend. You’ll hear course notes and any updates for the day.

  4. Your run group races

Timed laps, one car at a time, against the clock.

  5. Your work assignment

Everyone gets a job. You help run the event when you aren’t racing.

Everyone takes a turn working. It’s how rallycross stays affordable and a great way to learn from the inside.

  6. Awards

Celebrate the day with everyone, whether you won your class or just had fun.
